Shepherd Serve & Learn Trip 2024 – Monday

Posted: July 17, 2024

Hey everyone! Hope you had a great day today! Here is the first blog post of the week…
Last night, after arriving at Shepherd, we toured the classrooms and got the rundown of where the week was going. We got to meet the interns and were each assigned to different classrooms. Later we played basketball in the heat and got eaten by mosquitos. We all went inside and washed up before debriefing and then went to bed because we were tired.
This morning, we ate a lovely breakfast of gravy and biscuits that Michael made for all of us. We then headed to our poverty 101 training for about two hours where Tim and David lead us through some exercises and thought processes to help us better understand the cycle of poverty. Tim used an analogy of looking through a stained-glass window and how we see things differently. This shows us that everyone’s stained glass window is different so everyone has a different perception of the world. We had lunch in the cafeteria with the kids and interns and got to experience the chaos and excitement of the classroom. Everyone definitely needed this first day to adjust and get a feel for how the rest of the week will go. Coffee was also very much needed and will be for the rest of the week. It’s our job to run the aftercare for the kids who can’t be picked up at the normal hour so we lead the kids in some games and fun activities to keep them busy and entertained. Once that was over, we had a great dinner of delicious lasagna, garlic bread, salad, grapes, and scrumptious brownies. Thank you DellaRoccos! David led our devotional after dinner. He asked us six important questions but the one that stood out to me was, “Reflect on your first love for Christ. How would you describe your love and passion for Jesus? How does that compare to your relationship with Him now?” This prompted me to think and reflect on my relationship with the Lord and how I can grow in my faith. We played a fun game of telephone afterwards. The boys played basketball in the near 100-degree heat but the girls decided to stay inside and play card games because we didn’t want to turn into rotisserie chickens. Don’t worry, the boys took much needed showers after their game before debriefing at the end of the night. We are all tired so we will need lots of prayer for energy and excitement this week!
Thank you, everyone!
